Hyperlink
We are the energy transition makers
With Hyperlink, Gasunie is realizing a pioneering project for the hydrogen infrastructure in north-west Germany. Around 70% of the planned hydrogen network is based on the conversion of existing natural gas pipelines - a resource-saving solution that enables us to put parts of Hyperlink into operation quickly.
Project manager Lara Hauck looks back on the conversions: ‘It was a great challenge, but thanks to the commitment of our team and the close cooperation with our service providers, we were able to prepare the first section for hydrogen transport in the same year.’
The Gasunie project team, led by Lara Hauck, is working on converting existing natural gas pipelines for the transport of hydrogen - a technically challenging task. The conversion often requires pioneering work, as there are no established solutions yet and many technical regulations are still under development. Strict safety precautions apply to all work.
The first work on our network began in 2023. By the end of 2024, 150 kilometers of natural gas pipeline had already been converted. Further measures are planned for 2025. By the end of the year, 200 kilometers of pipeline will be hydrogen-compatible.
Hyperlink: 1,000km hydrogen grid for Germany
Gasunie is using a combination of existing and new infrastructure for the 1,000km-long Hyperlink hydrogen grid. More than two-thirds of the envisioned network will consist of repurposed natural gas pipelines, enabling us to minimise costs, cut construction times and reduce the impact on people and the environment.
Hydrogen: the key to achieving climate neutrality
Germany wants to become climate-neutral by 2045 and so must make the switch to alternatives to fossil fuels as quickly as possible. Green hydrogen plays a key role in making that happen. Converted into hydrogen, electricity from renewable sources can be efficiently stored and transported. By building a robust hydrogen infrastructure, we will significantly reduce carbon emissions and ensure climate neutrality and self-sufficiency in our energy supply.
We are the energy transition architects
Gasunie is already taking a leading role in the development of the Dutch hydrogen network, and now the company is bringing this know-how to Germany. We are building new hydrogen storage facilities, import terminals and a new offshore hydrogen infrastructure network. We continuously share our knowledge with our local partners so that we can, together, reach our shared target of having a fully carbon-neutral energy supply by 2045.
